Civil Rights

The term "civil rights" is broad but intended to include fundamental human rights and freedoms arising out of constitutions, statutes, and common law. Thus, in the field of employment, it covers freedom from discrimination, from sexual harassment, from oppression based upon gender or sexual orientation, from retaliation for engaging in protected public policy activities, and more. When government is involved, "civil rights" also contemplates the pursuit of claims against the government by injured citizens (who may or may not be employees of the government).
